GEORGE TOWN: A group of people protesting against Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and the planned Bersih 2.0 rally at the mid-span of Penang Bridge caused a 10km-long traffic jam.

The situation worsened when one of the protesters on a motorcycle collided with another motorcyclist, who sustained facial and hand injuries in the accident.

The protesters, who were members from several NGOs, parked cars on two of the three lanes on the bridge, leaving only one lane open to traffic.

They held banners and shouted on the bridge for about 15 minutes until they were dispersed by two traffic policemen.

Street protest: Protesters marching during the demonstration near Chulia Street in George Town Friday.

A large group of protesters, including Senator Ezam Nor, had earlier marched from the Lebuh Acheh Mosque to Komtar at 2.20pm after Friday prayers.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob said police arrested eight men, including Ezam, who surrendered at the police station after the demonstration.

He said seven men were arrested around the Komtar area when they refused to disperse despite being ordered to do so.

“Police are investigating them under Section 27 of Police Act for unlawful assembly.

“This was an illegal gathering and we view the matter seriously,” he said at the Penang Road police station yesterday.
